At least in common usage, a wether is a sheep castrated before maturity; twist as one will, a wether will not have progeny. Arguably, Thomas needed synonyms, and "Adam's wether" fits the intonation and cadence of the lines that the word itself helps to create. Tindall does not describe his reading of the sonnet directly; he treats it as if it can be assumed. His critical text is an analysis of that reading. The reader must see through Tindall's analysis to find the reading that Tindall proposes, and the reader must have the skills of reading that are required to do this.

Later, critical writings on the same stanza will be exam ined, and the text will need to be examined to see, in detail, how the stanza is being read by the literary critic, what the process of "reading" becomes and, therein, to what the activity of "reading" refers for the critical community. Let us begin with the text of The Waste Land before us. 8 Then follows the dedication to Ezra Pound. " We wish to concentrate on the opening stanza of this first part. The title "The Burial of the Dead" is strange, for who else, if not the dead, are to be buried?

Moreover, once such symbolism is introduced, each image in the text is open to similar interrogation; the continuity of reading the sonnet disintegrates and becomes a puzzle. How are allusions such as "Adam's wether" inte grated within such a reading, especially if a coherent scheme of meaning for these allusions is required? William Tindall analyzes the sonnet differently: The metaphor of sheep, unfolding from lamb to ram, through wether, mutton, flock, and fold (cf. 174), includes Thomas' present and future conditions, the seasons, and the globe.
