At least in common usage, a wether is a sheep castrated before maturity; twist as one will, a wether will not have progeny. Arguably, Thomas needed synonyms, and "Adam's wether" fits the intonation and cadence of the lines that the word itself helps to create. Tindall does not describe his reading of the sonnet directly; he treats it as if it can be assumed. His critical text is an analysis of that reading. The reader must see through Tindall's analysis to find the reading that Tindall proposes, and the reader must have the skills of reading that are required to do this.
